Excavation safety encompasses the practices, procedures, and equipment used to protect workers from the hazards of working in or near excavations and trenches. Cave-ins are one of the most dangerous construction hazards.

Key Requirements
- **Soil classification** — Type A, B, or C
- **Protective systems** — sloping, shoring, or shielding
- **Daily inspections** — before each shift and after rain
- **Competent person** — designated to inspect and authorize entry
- **Access/egress** — ladders, ramps, or stairs within 25 feet
- **Utilities** — locate and mark before digging
- **Spoil piles** — kept at least 2 feet from the edge
Protective Systems
- **Sloping/benching** — cut the trench walls at a safe angle
- **Shoring** — hydraulic or timber supports
- **Shielding** — trench box or trench shield
