Scaffolding Safety

Scaffolding safety covers the standards, practices, and equipment requirements for working on scaffolds. Scaffolds are used extensively in construction and are regulated by OSHA.

29 CFR 1926.451–454 — Scaffolds

Key Requirements

  • Designed by a qualified person for loads and configuration
  • Erected and dismantled under supervision of a competent person
  • Inspected before each shift by a competent person
  • Guardrails, midrails, and toeboards on open sides
  • Full planking or decking on working levels
  • Access provided (ladders, stairs, or ramps)
  • Base plates and mud sills on stable surfaces
  • Ties and braces to prevent tipping

Scaffold Types

  • **Supported scaffolds** — platforms supported by legs (frame, system)
  • **Suspended scaffolds** — platforms hung from overhead supports
  • **Mobile scaffolds** — supported on wheels or casters
  • **Aerial lifts** — cherry pickers, boom lifts
