Shop Drawing

Detailed drawings prepared by a subcontractor, fabricator, or supplier showing how a specific component will be manufactured and installed.

What is a Shop Drawing?

A shop drawing is a detailed drawing, diagram, schedule, or other data specially prepared for the work by the contractor or any subcontractor, manufacturer, supplier, or distributor to illustrate some portion of the work.

Shop Drawings vs Design Drawings

  • **Design drawings** — show what is to be built (by the architect/engineer)
  • **Shop drawings** — show how it will be fabricated and installed (by the contractor)

Common Shop Drawings

  • Structural steel detailing
  • Precast concrete panels
  • Curtain wall and glazing systems
  • MEP coordination drawings
  • Cabinetry and millwork
  • Fire protection layouts

Approval Process

Shop drawings go through a review cycle: contractor prepares, architect/engineer reviews, and either approves, returns for revision, or rejects.
